A new pocket park at the corner of NW 15th Avenue and NW Glisan Street in Portland’s Pearl District is at the nexus of a number of transportation corridors and new development surrounding the open space. Two concept designs create a space that can be visually engaging to passing motorists while also offering respite to visitors within the small plaza; one concept with a small parking area and the second a parklet. The Parking Plaza use three folding steel screens to create a sheltered seating area while providing a separation between the car court and the smaller pedestrian plaza. The car court is paved with permeable paving with grass strips that extend into the pedestrian zone creating a seamless transition between auto and pedestrian. The Parklet creates a pedestrian focused plaza with seating, gardens and the potential for the City’s new Biketown/bikeshare program or foodcarts. A multi-colored paving pattern, brightly dyed wood benches, and flowering dogwood trees create a rich and textured landscape.
